Dame Liz re-appointed to the National Heritage Memorial Fund

The Prime Minister has today re-appointed Dame Liz Forgan OBE as Chair of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, for a further term of eighteen months from the end of her current term until 1 October 2008.

Biographical Details

Dame Liz Forgan OBE has been Chair of the National Heritage Memorial Fund since 2001 and Chair of the Scott Trust since 2004. She started her career in newspaper journalism, serving as Arts Editor on the Teheran Journal from 1967 to 1968, then on the Hampstead and Highgate Express from 1969 to 1974, and on the London Evening Standard from 1974 to 1978. She became Editor of Guardian Women from 1978 to 1982, and was a Guardian columnist from 1997 to 1998, during which time she was also a columnist on the London Evening Standard. She became Founding Senior Commissioning Editor, and then Director of Programmes, at Channel 4 from 1981 to 1993. She then served as Managing Director, BBC Network Radio from 1993 to 1996. She has been a Board Member of the British Film Institute, a Trustee of the Media Trust and of the Phoenix Trust, and Chair of the Churches Conservation Trust. She is a Director of the Conservatoire of Dance and Drama and a Trustee of the Royal Anniversary Trust. She was awarded an OBE in 1999 and made DBE in 2006.

Notes for Editors

The National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF) is a fund of last resort which provides grants for buying items which are of outstanding interest, importance to the national heritage, and which are at risk of being developed, damaged or destroyed. The NHMF is also responsible for the distribution of the heritage share of the proceeds from the National Lottery via the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). The HLF gives financial help to projects which safeguard improved access to land, buildings, objects and collections of importance to the national heritage of the UK. It can also provide support for projects which produce wider public benefits in terms of education, access and urban regeneration. Remuneration for the post is £42.682 per annum.
