PM s monthly press conference

6 November 2006

ID cards, Saddam Hussein’s death penalty and security in the Middle East dominated the agenda at the PM’s monthly press conference.

Other topics included the Respect agenda, financing of the 2012 Olympics, Scottish independence and the Queen’s Speech.

Selected PM comments from the press conference

ID cards

"The benefits of a good identity system are very clear."

Saddam Hussein’s death penalty

"This trial gives us a very clear reminder of the total and barbaric brutality of that regime."

ASBOs

"The use of anti-social legislation is transforming local communities."

About the monthly press conferences

Once a month while Parliament is in session, the PM answers questions from local, national and international journalists inside the State Dining Room of 10 Downing Street.

The session usually lasts an hour and Mr Blair has no prior notification of the questions. He is the first Prime Minister to hold such regular sessions.
