The Queen has approved the nomination of the Right Reverend John Lawrence Pritchard MA M.Litt, Suffragan Bishop of Jarrow, for election as Bishop of Oxford in succession to the Right Reverend Richard Douglas Harries MA, who resigned on 2 June 2006.

The Right Reverend John Pritchard (aged 58) studied for his first degree at St Peter’s College, Oxford and trained for the ordained ministry at Ridley Hall, Cambridge. He served his first curacy at St Martin’s- in- the- Bull Ring, Birmingham between 1972 and 1976. Between 1976 and 1980 he was Diocesan Youth Chaplain and Assistant Director of Education in Bath and Wells Diocese. Between 1980 to 1988 he was Priest in Charge of Wilton (Taunton) in Bath and Wells. From 1989 to 1993 he was Director of Pastoral Studies at Cranmer Hall Durham, and from 1993 to 1996 was Warden. In 1996 he was appointed Archdeacon of Canterbury and Canon Residentiary of Canterbury Cathedral. Since 2002 he has been Suffragan Bishop of Jarrow.
The Bishop’s publications include Practical Theology in Action, 1996; The Intercessions Handbook, 1997; Beginning Again, 2000; Living the Gospel Stories Today, 2001; How to Pray, 2002; Living Easter through the Year, 2005; and How to Explain your Faith, 2006.
John Pritchard is married to Wendy and they have two daughters. His interests include fell walking, writing, reading, music and cricket.
