PM in foreign affairs talks

6 February 2007

Tony Blair held talks with the new commander of the Iraq Multinational Force today.

Lt. Gen. David Petraeus was selected to replace George W. Casey Jr. as commander last month.

The PM also greeted the UN special envoy for Kosovo, Martti Ahtisaari, to Number 10 this afternoon.

Afterwards Mr Blair said:

"I have had constructive and useful discussions with UN Special Envoy Martti Ahtisaari in Downing Street today.

"We agreed the presentation of his draft settlement proposals to the parties in Belgrade and Pristina represented an important step forward in the Kosovo status process. I assured the Special Envoy of my full support for his efforts.

"I am confident that his proposals can form the basis for a fair and sustainable settlement for Kosovo that would enhance the stability of the region as a whole and lead to a better future for all communities in Kosovo.  I encourage all sides in Kosovo to engage constructively with the Special Envoy during the forthcoming consultation period."
