"The secret to success is in the detail" confides Commanding Officer Tim Lowe in our new film, as he prepares for a visit by the Prime Minister.
Read the transcript for the film below:
Man:
Tomorrow we’ve got the Prime Minister visiting the ship. The reason he’s coming
is to deliver a lecture on defence.
Mark Wallace:
Are you nervous about it?
John Watts:
No. No. I’ve met… I’ve met him before, actually.
Tim Lowe:
He’ll take a hover and then he’ll move sideways across the deck and down.
So if you’re there…
We had a team from Number 10 appear, and from there on in, it was a case of sitting down and detail. The secret, I’m afraid, is getting into the detail.
John Watts:
Has the lectern arrived?
Man:
Yes.
John Watts:
This will be the most unique venue that the Prime Minister’s ever done a lecture. It’s absolutely huge, as you can see. The Navy put in a variety of their equipment and we’re going to transform this space into something that can be used for a lecture.
Mark Wallace:
We’ll try just camouflage netting and see if we can get away with that.
Down the middle, yeah.
Really, we’re setting the backdrop for him to speak against. What we don’t want is to stage it in a theatrical way. What we do want to do, though, is give the viewer listening to what he’s having to say a sense of reality of where he is.
Man:
One, two, three, four, five, six. Microphone check.
Tim Lowe:
If it’s sunny, we’ll be lucky. It’ll probably be raining, so we won’t have a problem.
There are two elements to tomorrow for me. First of all, delivering what Number
10 and what the Prime Minister need in terms of getting the lecture and getting his message across. But also, for me and for my team, it’s giving my team the opportunity to have some of their work recognised by the top man in the country,
by the Prime Minister.
Heather Chick:
We’re doing small sausage rolls, small oggies, basically pasties, all from around here. We’re going to have Cornish clotted cream with scones, to try and give him a little bit of South West food, really.
John Watts:
As soon as we get the final confirmation of figures, numbers, we’ll just block the seats out according to that.
I always get nervous just before…
Mark Wallace:
I know you do.
John Watts:
..a visit by the Prime Minister.
Tim Lowe:
If I was saying "I’m totally confident", that would be a lie. Yeah, of course I’m nervous.
He’s coming in the short way.
Mark Wallace:
Can we just pop a microphone on the Prime Minister? As soon as you’re entering,
you are on TV. You’re walking across to the lectern…
Tim Lowe:
The reward for my team is they’re going to get the chance to engage and talk to the man as well, and that’s the important piece. There is nothing worse than when you go through all this preparation and deliver something, they walk through, do what they’re here to do and then they go and there’s no interaction.
The interaction piece for me is all-important.
Man:
If we’re going, we need to go now.
Man:
You’ve got to go.
Prime Minister:
I’ve got to go?
Tim Lowe:
I think we can be proud of that. That worked really well. Thank you, RPA.
Did you actually get to say hello?
RPA:
No, sir.
Tim Lowe:
Oh, I’m sorry. Oh, I do apologise. Never mind. Next time. Next time.
