Ministerial Appointments

8 May 2007

Her Majesty the Queen is pleased to approve Ministerial Appointments for the Ministry of Justice and Northern Ireland Office.

Ministry of Justice

The Department for Constitutional Affairs becomes the Ministry of Justice on Wednesday 9 May. Following Her Majesty The Queen’s approval to new Ministerial appointments, the Ministers in the Ministry of Justice will (from that day) be:

  • The Rt Hon Lord Falconer of Thoroton QC (Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice)
  • The Rt Hon Harriet Harman QC MP (Minister of State)
  • The Rt Hon David Hanson MP (Minister of State)
  • The Rt Hon Baroness Ashton of Upholland (Parliamentary Under Secretary of State)
  • Gerry Sutcliffe MP (Parliamentary Under Secretary of State)
  • Bridget Prentice MP (Parliamentary Under Secretary of State)
  • Vera Baird MP (Parliamentary Under Secretary of State)

Northern Ireland Office

Following the restoration of devolved government in Northern Ireland, the number of Ministerial offices in the Northern Ireland Office is being reduced. Accordingly, the Rt Hon David Hanson MP will not be replaced as Minister of State in the Northern Ireland Office and David Cairns MP who is currently Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at both the Scotland Office and the Northern Ireland Office will become full time Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Scotland Office on 9 May.

Notes for editors

Each of the Ministers in the Ministry of Justice, apart from the Rt Hon David Hanson MP and Gerry Sutcliffe MP, is currently a Minister in the Department for Constitutional Affairs. Gerry Sutcliffe MP will not be replaced as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the Home Office, in consequence of the transfer of Home Office functions to the Ministry of Justice.
