Press briefing from the Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman on: Ministry of Justice, Prime Minister/President Sarkozy and Prime Minister
Ministry of Justice
The Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman (PMOS) drew journalists’ attention to the statement on Ministerial appointments. David Hanson would move across as a Minister of State from the Northern Ireland Office to the Ministry of Justice and that Gerry Sutcliffe would move from the Home Office to the Ministry of Justice.
Asked what David Hanson would be doing, the PMOS said that the important thing about David Hanson’s employment meant that there would be two Ministers of State within the department, so while Lord Falconer was in the Lords, there would now be two Ministers of State in the Commons.
Prime Minister/President Sarkozy
Asked if we recognised the Financial Times story about the Prime Minister’s conversation with the proposed French Prime Minister, the PMOS said that we would maintain the tradition of not commenting in detail on private conversations between Prime Ministers.
Prime Minister
Asked if journalists should be prepared to go to Sedgefield on Thursday, the PMOS said that visits to the constituency fell into the Labour Party side, rather than the Government side.
Asked if the Prime Minister would have an audience with The Queen this week, the PMOS replied that he was not sure when The Queen returned from her visit to America. The PMOS stressed to people that whenever the Prime Minister signalled his intention to resign as Leader of the Labour Party, that did not affect his position as Prime Minister.
Asked to confirm that the Prime Minister would remain as Leader of the Labour Party until a replacement was elected, the PMOS replied that it was not a matter for him, but he followed the logic.
