The Queen has been pleased to appoint Warren J Smith Esq JP DL as Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant for Greater Manchester upon the retirement of Colonel Sir John Timmins KCVO OBE.
Biographical note
Mr Warren Smith is aged 58. His career started with the District Bank in Manchester. He is Chairman of LPC Living, specialists in regeneration, and of a number of property and regeneration companies based in Salford. Mr Smith was appointed a magistrate in 1983, a Deputy Lieutenant in 1995 and was High Sheriff in 1997. From 1983 to 1993 he was a member of Manchester Council for Community Relations and in 1994 he founded the Progress Trust, funded by the Government to develop education, employment and training initiatives in the black and minority ethnic communities. In 1992 he became Chairman of the Free Trade Hall Management Company and was founder Chairman of Hallogen, operators of the Bridgewater Hall. In 1998 he became Chairman of The Manchester Millennium Quarter Trust which includes URBIS. He was a member of the Architectural Advisory Committee for the extension at Manchester City Art Gallery and a member of the Steering Group which put forward the proposal for The Lowry. He is a Trustee of Manchester Concert Hall Trust.
From 1995 to 1998 he was National Chairman of Turning Point and from 1994 to 2002 he was Deputy Chairman of Mental Health Services of Salford (NHS Trust). Other past appointments include membership of the Board of the Hallé Concert Society and serving as Governor of Chetham’s School of Music. He is a Trustee of a number of local charities, including Chairmanship of Salford Lads’ and Girls’ Club and its £1m appeal, and is a Governor of St Clement’s School, Ordsall.
Mr Warren Smith is single. His interests include the performing and visual arts, gardening and travel.
