Minister for Africa, Asia and UN
Lord Malloch-Brown KCMG
Lord Malloch-Brown was appointed Minister for Africa, Asia and the United Nations (UN) in June 2007, as part of Gordon Brown's first Cabinet. Previously, he was United Nations Deputy Secretary-General from 1 April 2006 to 31 December 2006.
Mark grew up in Zimbabwe, but was educated at Marlborough College, Magdalene College, Cambridge, and the University of Michigan.
He was the political correspondent at The Economist between 1977 and 1979, and founding editor of the Economist Development Report. He then worked for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees with Kofi Annan.
In 1986, Mark joined the Sawyer-Miller Group as the lead international partner. He left in 1994 to join the World Bank as Vice-President for External Affairs, with responsibility for relations with the UN.
In 1999, he returned to the UN where he was appointed Administrator of the UN Development Programme by the then Secretary-General, Kofi Annan. In January 2005, he was made Chef de Cabinet, again by Kofi Annan.
Lord Malloch-Brown is married with four children.
