Gordon Brown speaking; image copyright: ReutersGordon Brown has hosted a breakfast meeting at Downing Street to discuss how City leaders can use their talents to address the challenges of today’s society.

He announced plans for a "council of social leadership" and an "international forum on social leadership" that would bring together business and voluntary sector expertise from around the world.

He said:

"I think the question for Britain is how this great leadership that you bring into business, and the financial services industry in particular, can be a benefit to the charities of our future."

Cabinet Office Minister Ed Miliband and Parliamentary Secretary Phil Hope, and Enterprise Minister Stephen Timms also attended.

The meeting was ahead of a speech the PM will give later in support of social action, participation and public service, which coincides with the publication of his book on the unsung heroes of society.
