Gordon Brown has outlined the aims and priorities agreed at the Commonwealth Heads of Government (CHOGM) meeting in Uganda.
In a written statement to Parliament, the PM said the Commonwealth was a "unique partnership" with a "critical role to play" in meeting global challenges such as climate change, trade, security and Millennium Development Goals (MDG) commitments. He also said the decision to suspend Pakistan’s membership, pending the reinstatement of democratic processes, showed that the Commonwealth stood for "democracy, human rights and the rule of law".
Outlining the summit’s conclusions, Mr Brown said that countries would "redouble the efforts" on delivering education for all and push ahead with MDG activity. A "successful conclusion" to World Trade Organisation negotiations and movement towards a declaration on climate change and emissions cuts were also high on the agenda, he said.
The three-day conference in Kampala ended with the publication of a joint communique on 25 November.
