Ed Balls:
After five months of consultation with teachers, with parents, with professionals, but also with young people and children all round the country, we’re finally today publishing our first ever national children’s plan. And just before it, I’ve been here today at the Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green with the prime minister, to see what’s happening here, and these young children really having fun but also learning in this wonderful place. Our national children’s plan will put the needs of children and families first. It’s about making sure that parents get the support they need to keep their children healthy but also happy and playing, and we’re gonna be really investing in children’s play and youth services all round the country. At the same time, we’re gonna be working hard to get from above average to world-class standards in all our schools, making sure that every child can fulfil their potential, and making sure that if any child falls behind, we can intervene to get them on the right track quickly. But it also means our schools working more closely with parents, and also with children’s professionals, to make sure that we tackle all the barriers to learning, which sometimes happen outside the classroom, ’cause kids are only in school for less than 20% of the time. And making sure that our children are healthy, they’re eating well, that they are also getting all the support they need, especially if they’ve got, for example, a learning difficulty. That’s the way to make sure that every child can get to world class. A culture of early intervention, making sure that our schools are at the centre of the whole community, the services for parents often on the same site, that’s our vision for the 21st-century school and children’s services. That’s the way to make sure that we support all our children, we back our parents and make Britain the best place in the world for children to grow up. That’s my ambition and our children’s plan is gonna take that forward and deliver it for all the families of Britain in the coming years.
