The PM has spoken of his excitement at the start of Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture 2008.
In a specially recorded message from Downing Street, the Prime Minister hailed the city’s achievement in being named Capital of Culture and said he looked forward to a "fantastic programme" of events. The year-long cultural festival will be offically launched in Liverpool at 20:08 GMT tonight.
The PM said:
"I’m delighted to offer my congratulations and my best wishes to the city of Liverpool at the start of your year as European Capital of Culture.
"The quality and diversity of culture in Britain is truly world class and this fantastic programme drawing on culture from all round the world provides the perfect opportunity to show case the contribution that Liverpool makes to our world class reputation."
Liverpool was named European Capital of Culture 2008 in June 2003 beating off five other hopefuls - Bristol, Birmingham, Cardiff, Newcastle-Gateshead and Oxford.
Planned highlights for the coming year include a musical about the city starring ex-Beatle Ringo Star,a season of music from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and a concert with Sir Paul McCartney at Liverpool Football Club’s Anfield stadium.
