PM meets carers at Citizen's Jury
11 January 2008
Gordon Brown has travelled to Leeds to discuss issues relating to caring in the latest Citizen's Jury.
The PM met a wide range of people from around the country, including young and elderly carers and representatives of caring organisations. Mr Brown said that he wished to listen to carers and their ideas on changes and policies around care that they want to see implemented.
Addressing the participants, the PM said:
"The first thing I want to do is pay tribute to all of the carers in the United Kingdom. Every one of you who is a carer is a hero - our society could not exist without you."
The meeting took place in Leeds Town Hall and was also attended by Health Secretary Alan Johnson and Care Services minister Ivan Lewis. Earlier today Anne McGuire, Minister for Disabled People, took part in a live webchat on carers issues in Downing Street.
The Citizens' Jury initiative was announced by the PM in a speech on the future of politics on 3 September 2006 and is an attempt to feed public opinion into government policy. The first jury, on the subject of education, was attended by the Prime Minister in Bristol.
