PM signs child education pledge

4 March 2008

Gordon Brown pledges to get every child into education by 2015; Crown copyrightGordon Brown has kick-started the Global Campaign for Education’s "Send My Friend" initiative with a promise to get every child into school by 2015.

Accompanied by BBC children’s presenters Sam and Mark, a group of young campaigners asked the Prime Minister to sign a giant ‘missing out’ card symbolising the 72 million children worldwide who are denied a primary education.

The PM noted the work of governments and campaigners to meet the universal education target contained in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) but added that more needed to be done.

He said:

"We need to redouble our efforts to get the remaining 72 million into school by 2015 and to improve their quality of learning. That is why the UK has committed £8.5 billion for education and why I am pledging £150 million of extra support to India’s national programme for elementary education."

The Send My Friend ‘08 campaign encourages children to ask their MP to state what action they will take to help reach the 2015 target. The pledges will be sent to the Prime Minister before he flies off to June’s G8 meeting in Japan.
