Quick Reads - transcript

The Prime Minister has described the Quick Reads campaign as a “great success story of the English language.”

Colin Jackson:

Hi, I’m Colin Jackson, and I’m one of Quick Reads’ new authors for 2008, and the title of my book is Life’s New Hurdles. We’ve been wonderfully entertained here today by the prime minister at 10 Downing Street, and it’s just been an incredible experience for me as one of the authors. I actually got involved after reading a Quick Reads, one that a previous author, Tanni Grey Thompson wrote. And she gave me the book and I read it and I thought this was a phenomenal, phenomenal book to do. Anything that helps adult education, encourages people to read, it’s just something exciting to be involved in. So I was really pleased when I offered to be part of Quick Reads and they accepted, and guess what? I delivered a book on time.

Gordon Brown:

And thanks to everybody on contributing to World Book Day. It’s a great day to be able to launch more Quick Reads on the day, to have two authors, Colin and Adele, here and to congratulate them on what they’ve done to contribute to Quick Reads, and to have so many readers and learners here who are benefiting from not only World Book Day but from the courses that are now available for both reading and for literacy, and, of course, the books that are available now for them to read.

Christine Simpson:

Hello. My name’s Christine Simpson. I’ve started secondary education for adults because of my granddaughter. She used to ask me to read and I used to get embarrassed and I’d just say I’d forgotten my reading glasses or I had a headache and I couldn’t read. And then she found out that I couldn’t read, so she used to say to me, “I’ll help you read, Nan, and spell”, so… When I went to the school, they started the Quick Reads off and I started doing them then, and I found it more interesting than a long book because the words weren’t as long and it was more broken down and it was more exciting to read them than a long book. I advise everyone, if they can’t read and write, to go and get an education, no matter how old they are, cos I’m 52 and it hasn’t stopped me.
