Jennette Arnold appointed to the Museum of London

The Prime Minister has appointed Jennette Arnold as a Governor of the Museum of London. Her term of appointment will run from 6 April 2008 to 5 April 2011.

Biographical Notes

Jennette Arnold was elected to the Greater London Authority in 2000. She has chaired the Mayor’s Cultural Strategy, which contained the Mayor’s pledge to bring the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to London. From 2002 to 2006 she was a member of the Arts Council England - London Board. She is currently Chair of the London Health Commission and campaigned for national legislation to ensure a smoke free London. Her other political appointments include membership of the UK delegation on the European Union Committee of the Regions. Jennette is currently a council member of the Royal Court Theatre and Governor of Sadler’s Wells Theatre Foundation. She is patron of Victoria Climbie Foundation and former Chair of the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust. Jennette’s first career was in nursing, eventually becoming a Senior Officer of the Royal College of Nursing. She began political life in 1992 when she was elected to Islington Council. In 2007 she was listed in the top 50 of Britain’s most powerful black women, published by New Nation, and among the Evening Standard’s list of the 1000 most influential Londoners.

2. The Museum of London was set up following the merger of the Guildhall and the London Museums in 1965 and is the world’s largest urban history museum. The Museum of London Acts of 1965 and 1986 define its scope of responsibilities and activities, which include caring for and making accessible a collection of over two million historic objects that speak to the story of the city.

3. The Greater London authority Act 2007, transfers the Government’s responsibilities for the Museum of London to the Mayor and the GLA, including the Prime Minister’s power of appointment to the museum’s Board of Governors with effect from 6th April 2008.

4. The posts are not remunerated. Reasonable expenses can be claimed.

5. The Appointments have been made in accordance with the OCPA Code of Practice. Appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. Jennette Arnold currently holds elected office as a Labour Member of the Greater London Authority.
