PM unveils security strategy

19 March 2008

Armed policeman outside the Houses of Parliament The Prime Minister has set out the Government’s approach to dealing with threats to national security, ranging from war and terrorism to climate change, disease and poverty.

Speaking to MP’s in the House of Commons earlier today, Mr Brown said that the nature of the threats faced by the British people has changed "beyond all recognition".

The PM said that the security services will be increased to 4,000 personnel, twice the 2001 level. At the same time, strengthened global institutions and "the power of ideas and shared values" will have as much a part to play as the police and other services, he said.

The PM said:

"The national security strategy shows a Britain resolute in the face of an unstable and increasingly uncertain international security landscape and demonstrates the lessons we and other countries have learned in recent years."

As part of the new strategy a national register of risks, previously classified as secret, will be made public. Experts from outside Government will also be invited to join a new National Security Forum to advise the recently constituted National Security Committee.

The strategy contains measures to recruit and retain more troops, more investment in the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre that analyses threats to the UK, and more funds to modernise intercept capability.
