The Prime Minister has appointed Jenny Abramsky CBE to the board of the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF) as Chair designate. From 1 September 2008, Ms Abramsky will serve as one of the NHMF’s trustees, and then succeed Dame Liz Forgan, as Chair of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, when Dame Liz steps down on 1 October 2008. Jenny Abramsky’s term of appointment will run from 1 September 2008 to 31 August 2011.
Biographical notes
Jenny Abramsky most recently served as Director of BBC Audio & Music, with responsibility for all BBC national radio networks, for the BBC’s Digital radio services, and for music across television, radio, online and live events. She has been a member of the BBC Executive Board, which is responsible for the delivery of BBC services and day-to-day operations across the organisation. She is also Chair of the Hampstead Theatre, a Trustee of the Central School of Ballet, an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music. She has been a Governor of the British Film Institute and a member of the Economic and Social Research Council. Jenny Abramsky has spent her working life at the BBC, where she pioneered continuous news (BBC Radio Five Live, BBC News Online, and BBC News 24), launched five digital radio stations and commissioned the Electric Proms (an annual festival of popular contemporary music, designed to complement the BBC Proms season of classical music). Under her leadership, the BBC has achieved record reach and record share of audiences, rising from 46% share in 1999 to 54% in 2007. Jenny Abramsky was awarded the CBE in the New Year Honours list 2001 for services to News and Radio Broadcasting. She has never belonged to a political party nor undertaken any party political activity since she joined the BBC.

The National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF) was set up as a memorial to those who gave their lives for the United Kingdom. The Fund is a resource of last resort which makes grants to acquire, maintain and preserve heritage of outstanding national importance and interest, which is either at risk or memorial in character.
The NHMF Chair and Trustees administer the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), one of the National Lottery ‘good causes’. The Heritage Lottery Fund’s aims are to i) encourage more people to be involved in and make decisions about their heritage, ii) conserve and enhance the UK’s diverse heritage, iii) ensure that everyone can learn about and access their heritage and iv) achieve a more equitable distribution of grants across the UK.
The NHMF Chair may claim an allowance of £42,964 per year.
This appointment has been made in accordance with the OCPA Code of Practice. Appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process.
