plasticglass - epetition response

2 May 2008

We received a petition asking:

"We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to oppose calls by police to introduce blanket use of plastic glasses even in pubs and other licensed premises with no history of violence. We feel blanket bans on glass are unnecessary and will have a detrimental effect on the licensed trade and the drinking experience of the millions of law-abiding pub goers in well run establishments up and down the country."

Details of Petition:

"This petition has been started by the pub trade paper The Morning Advertiser on behalf of its readers. The trade is extremely concerned at calls from the Association of Chief Police Officers for glass bans to be introduced in high-energy pubs and clubs. We feel a targeted approach - where polycarbonate glasses were only introduced on a venue-by-venue basis - would be fairer. We believe it is wrong to disadvantage the entire pub trade because of poor management at certain establishments."

Read the Government’s response

The Government is very much aware of the views held by ACPO and individual police forces across the country on the use of polycarbonates, as many of their front line officers have first hand experience of the consequences of glass-related injuries. This is why the Government is working with the Police and the alcohol industry to reduce alcohol related violence through the use of appropriate tools and powers.

Therefore I would like to reiterate that the Government believes that a risk based, rather than blanket approach to requiring licensed premises to use safer alternatives, is the best way to tackle the problem of glass-related injuries. This is the position that the Government set out in "Safe.Sensible.Social. The next steps in the National Alcohol Strategy" which was published in June 2007.

I would also like to reassure you that the Expert Group on Glassware formed by the Home Office, which consists of various industry representatives as well as representatives from ACPO and individual police forces, will address the industry’s concerns, as well as the concerns of their consumers. The Expert Group on glassware aims to achieve a workable solution in respect of the use of safer alternatives in high-risk premises to reduce the incidents of glass-related injuries.
