The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) promotes the economic contribution and educational benefits of the arts, media, sport and our national heritage.
DCMS promotes UK broadcasting and safeguards standards for viewers and listeners. It funds the Arts Council, which supports the creative arts, including music, drama, dance and painting. And it backs British movies through the Film Council. Through the British Board of Film Classification, films are classified for different audiences.
Museums, galleries and libraries are supported by DCMS. And the nation’s historic buildings and sites are conserved and made more accessible with the help of English Heritage. DCMS has policy responsibility for how the National Lottery distributes money for good causes. It also sponsors the National Lottery Commission which regulates the lottery.
The Department’s tourism policy aims to ensure that Britain’s annual influx of 25 million overseas visitors enjoy their visit, as well as encouraging Britons to enjoy breaks at home.
DCMS backs sport through Sport England and UK Sport and develops government strategies on sport in schools and participation in international sporting events. The department also regulates gambling and horse racing. And it develops the licensing laws for public houses and entertainment venues.
