Thursday 28 November morning government press briefing

Briefing from the Prime Minister’s Spokesman on: Access to Medicines and PM’s Europe Speech.

Access to Medicines

The Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman (PMOS) advised journalists that the Prime Minister had had a breakfast meeting with Clare Short, Baroness Symons, representatives from the pharmaceuticals industry and other international organisations, including charities, to launch the report of the UK’s high-level working group on access to medicines. This group had been set up just before last year’s G8 Summit in Genoa and its purpose was to look at how we could make available essential medicines for illnesses such as HIV/Aids, TB and malaria at preferential prices - a subject in which the Prime Minister himself had taken a close interest.

PM’s Europe Speech

The PMOS informed journalists that the Prime Minister would be making a speech on Europe during a visit to Cardiff this afternoon. He would set out the Government’s latest thinking on the Future of Europe Convention, focussing in particular on the principle that Europe should integrate more when it was in our collective interest, but on the basis of the primacy of the nation state.
