Briefing from the Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman on: EU-Latin America Summit, Afghanistan, Aznar and Stephen Byers.
EU-Latin America Summit
The PMOS said that the Prime Minister had spoken at the summit and had referred to the War against Terrorism saying that post-September 11 what had been remarkable was the coming together of nations from around the world to focus on the issue. He had said that we all recognised that the problem still exists and that, today of all days, there was a recognition that the job was not yet done. He further stated that terrorists would exploit whatever problems there were in the world, from poverty to issues such as the Middle East, so we needed to retain our focus on those issues.
Afghanistan
The PMOS gave an update on Operation Condor. Australian Special Forces had been engaged by Al Qaida/Taliban elements and 45 Commando went in to assist them. They were now leading an operation to clear and secure the area. The PMOS said that the combined force numbers amounted to around 1000 personnel and the operation is in south-east Afghanistan.
Aznar
Asked whether thePrime Minister would have a bilateral with Prime Minister Aznar today, the PMOS said that they were meeting on Monday but that he would not be surprised if they had an informal discussion today. Asked if they would touch on Gibraltar the PMOS replied that he did not think so.
Stephen Byers
Asked if the Prime Minister had a discussion with Mr Byers today the PMOS said that the Prime Minister was up very early and he was not aware they had spoken. Asked if the Prime Minister was going to fire Stephen Byers the PMOS said no.
