PMOS afternoon briefing - 15 May

Briefing from the Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman on: Euro.

Euro

In answer to questions, the Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman (PMOS) said that there would be four separate occasions during which Cabinet Ministers would be able to discuss the issue of the Euro. Next week’s trilateral meetings, jointly held by the Prime Minister and the Chancellor with individual Cabinet Ministers, would be the first occasion. The second would be next Thursday’s Cabinet at which there would be an initial ’second reading’ discussion.

The week commencing 2 June would see further trilateral meetings to discuss the Treasury’s assessment due to be circulated on 26 May. Following that, a Special Cabinet could be convened on 5 or 6 June so that Ministers could take part in a final discussion. There was therefore plenty of opportunity for Ministers to test their understanding of the decision they had been asked to make and also to express their view before reaching a final decision. The Chancellor would then make a Statement to Parliament on 9 June.

Asked whether Cabinet would take a vote on the issue, the PMOS pointed out that Cabinet decisions were taken by consensus. No doubt that would apply to the Euro issue as well. He added that we would not be providing a running commentary on the status of the assessment. This was because 9 June was not that far away, so inevitably we were already at the stage where it could be said that the assessment was being finalised.
