The Queen has approved the nomination of the Right Reverend John Warren Gladwin MA, DipTh, for election as Bishop of Chelmsford in succession to the Right Reverend John Freeman Perry ALCD, LTh, MPhil on his resignation.

Notes for Editors

The Right Reverend John Gladwin (born 1942) was educated first at Churchill College, Cambridge where he took his MA. He trained for ministry at St John’s College, Durham. He was assistant curate at St John the Baptist Parish Church Kirkheaton, Huddersfield from 1967 to 1971. From 1971 to 1977 he was Tutor at St John’s College, Durham and Honorary Chaplain to students at St Nicholas Church, Durham. From 1977 to 1982 he was licensed to Officiate, and was Director of Shaftesbury Project on Christian Involvement in Society. From 1982 to 1988 he was Secretary to the General Synod Board for Social Responsibility. From 1984 to 1988 he was Prebendary at St Paul’s Cathedral. From 1988 to 1994 he was Provost at Sheffield Cathedral and was also Anglican Adviser at Yorkshire Television. From 1990 he was a member of General Synod. Since 1994 he has been Bishop of Guildford. Bishop Gladwin is Chair of the Board of Christian Aid, a member of the Archbishops’ Council and Chair of its Ministry Division.

He has had three publications: "God’s People in God’s World" in 1979, "The Good of the People" in 1988 and "Love and Liberty" in 1998.

Bishop Gladwin is married to Lydia who is a social worker. His recreations include gardening, travel and beekeeping.
