Mastership of Trinity College, Cambridge

The Queen has been pleased to approve that Professor Sir Martin Rees Kt FRS be appointed to the Mastership of Trinity College, Cambridge in succession to Professor Amartya Sen FBA PhD MA, who retires in January 2004.

Professor Sir Martin Rees (aged 61) is Royal Society Research Professor at Cambridge University and has been Astronomer Royal since 1995 and a Fellow of King’s College, Cambridge since 1973.  He was Director of the Institute of Astronomy at Cambridge for nine years and has held visiting positions at leading scientific centres for the study of astronomy around the world.  Sir Martin is a Fellow of the Royal Society, has wide experience of other universities, and has won many international prizes.  He is the author of a number of books and numerous scientific papers and more general articles.

Sir Martin is a Trinity graduate, and holds an honorary Fellowship at Trinity.

Sir Martin is married to Professor Caroline Humphrey, who is Professor of Asian Anthropology at Cambridge.
