The Prime Minister has today appointed Professor Kathy Sykes and Dr Maggie Semple OBE as Trustees of the National Museum of Science and Industry for a period of four years.
Biographical Notes
Professor Kathy Sykes has been professor of Public Engagement of Science and Engineering at BristolUniversity since November 2002. She is also a trainer in communication and media skills to scientists, running courses for eg research councils; a mentor for scientists communicating their work (for example to schools groups); and co-Director of the Cheltenham Festival of Science. Professor Sykes has presented science programmes for the BBC and has undertaken other television and radio work. Her earlier career includes serving as Head of Science for ‘Explore @ Bristol’ where she was in charge of creating the content of a new hands-on science centre which was subsequently voted Top Tourist Attraction in 2001; and acting as a researcher on ‘Tomorrow’s World’. Professor Sykes has been a member of Wellcome Trust’s Public Engagement Strategic Advisory Group since 2002.
Dr Maggie Semple OBE has been Chief Executive of The Experience Corps Ltd since 2001, an independent, non-profit making organisation funded by the Home Office set up to encourage people aged 50+ to volunteer their skills and experience to benefit their local communities. She has also been a Civil Service Commissioner since 2001. Dr Semple was previously Director of The Learning Experience for the NMEC at The Dome (1997-2001) and Director of Education and Training at the Arts Council of England (1991-97). She has extensive networks across the public, private and not for profit sectors, combined with experience of working in the commercial sector. Dr Semple is a Governor of De Montford University and is a member of The Roundhouse, Camden, and the Arts Educational Schools Trust, among others.
Professor Sykes and Dr Semple have not been involved in any political activity in the last five years

The National Museum of Science & Industry incorporates the Science Museum in London, the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television in Bradford, the National Railway Museum in York and the Wroughton outstation in Wiltshire. The Museum’s aim is to promote the public understanding of the history and contemporary practice of science, medicine, technology and industry. Trustees are not remunerated.
