PMOS afternoon briefing - 21 October

Briefing from the Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman on: Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland

The Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman (PMOS) updated journalists on what was going on in Northern Ireland today. He said that the Prime Minister and the Taoiseach were currently receiving a report from General John de Chastelain. Since the General had been delayed in arriving at Hillsborough, a joint press conference with the two Prime Ministers would now take place at some point later this afternoon. Buckingham Palace had been informed that events were running slightly behind schedule and were aware that the arrangements for the Prime Minister’s weekly Audience with the Queen might have to be changed. Asked if it was unusual for the Prime Minister to keep the Queen waiting, the PMOS said that there was an ongoing process in Northern Ireland at the moment, the timetable for which had extended a little. No doubt the Palace would understand if this evening’s arrangements for the Prime Minister’s Audience had to be changed. He would not characterise the situation in the same way as the questioner.

In answer to questions about the IRA’s statements, the PMOS said that the Prime Minister would be holding a press conference in Northern Ireland shortly. There was no point pre-empting what he might say when journalists could hear it directly from the Prime Minister himself. Asked if the Prime Minister had travelled to Northern Ireland with a doctor in attendance, the PMOS said no.
