PMOS afternoon briefing - 30 October

Briefing from the Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman on: Iraq.

Iraq

Asked if the Prime Minister welcomed Jim Davidson’s endorsement of his Iraq policy, the Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman (PMOS) said that he hadn’t spoken to the Prime Minister about Mr Davidson’s comments, but the Prime Minister had answered that on the radio this morning. While we had acknowledged repeatedly that things were not perfect inside Iraq and that there were very real security problems, particularly in Baghdad and around the Tikrit Triangle, equally it was important to be clear that the situation was improving in large parts of the country. What was beyond doubt was that one of the world’s most evil and brutal dictatorships had been removed. It went without saying that that was a good thing for the Iraqi people. Mr Davidson’s comments bore that out. Asked what the Prime Minister thought about Jim Davidson being mistaken for him, the PMOS said that he hadn’t asked him, but he guessed that that the Iraqi people had not had access to the media for many many years until recently.
