Deanery of Wells

The Queen has approved that the Reverend Canon John Martin Clarke, MA, BD Principal of Ripon College Cuddesdon, be appointed to the Deanery of Wells in succession to the Very Reverend Richard Lewis, MA on his retirement.

Canon John Clarke (born 1952) was educated at Hertford College, Oxford and Edinburgh University. He trained for ordination at Edinburgh Theological College. From 1976 to 1979 he was Curate at Kenton in Newcastle and from

1979 to 1982 Precentor at St Ninian’s Cathedral in Perth. He was from 1982 to 1987 Information Officer and Communications Adviser to the General Synod of the Scottish Episcopal Church. From 1987 to 1988 he was in Greece as the Philip Usher Memorial Scholar. On his return in 1989 he became Vicar of St Mary’s Battersea in Southwark. Since 1997 he has been the Principal of Ripon College Cuddesdon, and from 2000 he has also been Canon and Prebendary of Lincoln Cathedral.

Canon Clarke is married to Cressida Nash and they have three children. His recreations include reading, music, walking and cricket
