Briefing from the Prime Minister’s Spokesman on: Sir Andrew Turnbull, Hunting, Rail and Iraq.
Sir Andrew Turnball
Asked for a reaction to the Cabinet Secretary’s interview in today’s Telegraph in which he had said that the Government would scrap hundreds of targets, the Prime Minister’s Spokesman (PMS) said that Sir Andrew Turnbull had been repeating something that the Chancellor had announced some time ago.
Hunting
Asked if the Prime Minister agreed with Prince Charles’ suggestion that a hunting ban would not work, the PMS said that the Prince of Wales was, of course, entitled to express a view. However, she did not think that the Prime Minister had seen his comments this morning as he was currently attending the European Council in Brussels.
Rail
Asked if the Government was going to ’stump up’ £22.5bn which the Rail Regulator, Tom Winsor, had said that Network Rail should receive, the PMS said that Mr Winsor had only announced his plans this morning. We would look at what was being suggested and respond in due course. She pointed out that the Transport Secretary, Alistair Darling, would be out and about today and would no doubt take the opportunity to comment on what Mr Winsor had said. In answer to further questions, the PMS pointed out that, as announced in the Government’s Ten-Year Transport Plan, we had been investing £33bn in our railways. Today’s announcement from Mr Winsor was a recognition by him that the UK’s rail infrastructure needed to be improved significantly.
Iraq
Asked if the Government had any plans to review the policy on using cluster bombs in the light of the publication of the Human Rights Watch report on the issue today, the PMS said not as far as she was aware.
