There are 228,000 more people in work now than a year ago according to figures out today. The number of people in employment now stands at a record 28.17m.
Government statistics show employment increased 37,000 in the three months to October 2003.
Employment has continued to rise throughout 2003, while unemployment has fallen to the lowest levels of the 1970s.
The number of people not working and claiming benefit is also down 7,900 to 917,000.
Responding to the figures, Minister for Work Des Browne said British success in tackling unemployment sets an example that other countries can follow.
"We are committed to build on the success of policies such as the New Deal by extending employment opportunity to groups and areas that still face disadvantage and social exclusion. Only by doing this will we move towards our aim of full employment in every region."
The Department for Work and Pensions and the Treasury published a document on the labour market last week.
