Victoria and Albert Museum Trustees Appointments

The Prime Minister has today appointed Jonathan Altaras, The Right Honourable Sir Timothy Sainsbury and Professor Lisa Jardine as Trustees of the V&A for periods of three, four and four years respectively.

Biographical Notes

Jonathan Altaras is a theatrical agent, and Director of Jonathan Altaras Associates Ltd which has represented actors including Dirk Bogarde, Eileen Atkins and Tom Courtenay. He is Chairman of the London Mardi Gras Festival, and a member of BAFTA. He holds a number of theatrical directorships, and has undertaken fundraising for the Royal Court Theatre.

Mr Altaras has not been involved in any political activity in the last five years.

The Rt Hon Sir Timothy Sainsbury is a businessman and philanthropist. He was MP for Hove from 1973 to 1997, holding a number of Ministerial posts in the previous Conservative administration including that of Minister of State for Trade and Industry (1990-94). He enjoyed a distinguished career at J Sainsbury plc, where he was a board member from 1962 until 1983. Sir Timothy is Chairman of the V&A’s International Council, which aims to secure major donations for the FuturePlan. He was Chairman of the Somerset House Trust from 1997 until 2002, and was president of a £25m campaign for Worcester College, Oxford.

Sir Timothy was President of the Hove Conservative Association from 1998 until 2002 and is currently President of the Conservative Friends of Israel.

Professor Lisa Jardine is an academic, writer, critic and broadcaster. She is Professor of Renaissance Studies at Queen Mary College, University of London and an Honorary Fellow of King’s College, Cambridge. Professor Jardine is a Board member of the Arts and Humanities Research Board (AHRB), and Director of the AHRB’s Research Centre for Editing Lives and Letters. She is Chair of the Governors of Westminster City School (an inner-city boys’ comprehensive), and a Trustee of United Westminster Schools Foundation, and takes an active interest in a wide range of education issues.

Professor Jardine has undertaken no significant political activity in the last five years.

The Victoria and Albert Museum houses collections of fine and applied art, craft and design. It includes the National Art Library, and the Trustees also manage the Theatre Museum, the National Museum of Childhood at Bethnal Green and the Wellington Museum at Apsley House. Trustees of the Victoria and Albert Museum are not remunerated.
