National Portrait Gallery (Marchioness of Douro)

The Prime Minister has today appointed The Marchioness of Douro as a Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery. The term of appointment will be for four years from 3 September 2004.

Biographical Notes

Lady Douro is a member of the English Heritage Panel for Apsley House, where she has lived since 1977. Lady Douro also lives at Stratfield Saye House, which is open to the public and houses many works of art and an archive connected with the Duke of Wellington. Lady Douro has been a trustee since 1976 and chairman since 1984 of the Guinness Trust (a Charitable Housing Association). Since 1996 she has been Patron of the Loddon School for Children with Autism and since 1999, a trustee of the Hermitage Development Trust, Somerset House.

The National Portrait Gallery houses the collection of portraits in various media of eminent persons in British History. The Gallery aims to promote through the medium of portraits the appreciation and understanding of the men and women who have made and are making British history and culture; and to promote the appreciation and understanding of portraiture in all media.
