Deanery of Derby

The Queen has approved that the Reverend Canon Martin Kitchen BA BD PhD AKC, Canon Residentiary and Vice-Dean of Durham Cathedral, be appointed to the Deanery of Derby in succession to the Very Reverend Michael Francis Perham MA on his elevation to the Bishopric of Gloucester.

Martin Kitchen (born 1947) attended the Polytechnic of North London, King's College London and Manchester University. He trained for ordination on the Southwark Ordination Course. From 1979 to 1983 he was Lecturer at the Church Army Training College, Blackheath and also Honorary Curate of Kidbrooke St James. From 1983 to 1988 he was Team Vicar then Team Rector of Whitworth, Manchester, and Chaplain to Manchester Polytechnic. From 1988 to 1997 he was Canon Residentiary of Southwark Cathedral. From 1988 to 1995 he was also Adviser on In-Service Training in Southwark diocese, becoming Diocesan Co-ordinator of Training from 1995 to 1997. He has been Canon Residentiary of Durham Cathedral since 1997 and Vice-Dean since 1999.

Canon Kitchen has a number of publications to his name. He is Director of the Archbishop's Examination in Theology (The Lambeth Diploma), Secretary to the Anglo-Nordic-Baltic Theological Conference and is Consultant to the Church of England Doctrine Commission.

Martin Kitchen is married to Dr Sheila Kitchen and they have one son. His recreations include German poetry, swimming, piano, theatre and the study of languages.
