Queen’s Gallantry Medal

Michael Tanner, Inspector, British Transport Police.
For his actions involving a man brandishing a knife in Finsbury, London.

On 1 December 2001 at 1330 Inspector Tanner returned to his station in a police van. As he was getting out he saw a man approach the van and begin to urinate over the wheels. Inspector Tanner confronted the man who immediately threatened to kill him and produced a knife from inside his coat. Inspector Tanner brought out his baton but the man ran towards him and stabbed him in the chest. Inspector Tanner then turned and ran but the man chased after him. Inspector Tanner stopped and turned back towards the man, struck him with his baton but was stabbed in the arm. He managed to escape and boarded an empty bus where the driver, nervous at the situation he found himself in, after several attempts closed the doors. Inspector Tanner telephoned for assistance. He then watched as the man moved towards a crowd of people outside the bus station. The man approached a young girl, putting a knife to her throat. She escaped without harm. Inspector Tanner, seeing the man’s actions and in spite of bleeding from his wounds, decided to get off the bus to try and distract him by shouting to get his attention. The man again chased after him but gave up and started to walk away. Inspector Tanner went after him and then two colleagues arrived and after a tussle the man was arrested and detained. The man has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
