Chair of the Forestry Commission

The Queen has approved the reappointment of The Right Honourable Lord Clark of Windermere as Chair of the Forestry Commission. Lord Clark’s appointment takes effect from 10 December 2004, and is for a term of three years.

Biographical Notes

Following his retirement from the House of Commons in which he was first elected in 1970, Lord Clark took his seat in the House of Lords in July 2001.

In 1999 he succeeded the late Lord Taylor of Gryfe as Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Forestry. In total he was active in the All-Party Forestry Group for almost 30 years and was also Vice-Chair of the Group throughout the early 1970s and 1980s. Until recently, he was also Chair of the All-Party Group on National Parks.

He was Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Minister for the Civil Service in Tony Blair’s first cabinet in 1997. In this capacity, he had responsibility for the administration of Her Majesty’s estates in the North of England. For eleven years previously he sat on the Shadow Cabinet with responsibility at times for Environmental Protection, Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Affairs, and Defence.

He promoted two Private Members Bills relating to wildlife and the countryside, which successfully reached the Statute Book.

Lord Clark is currently leader of the UK delegation to NATO Parliamentary Assembly and serves as a non-executive director of Thales (UK) plc, the defence electronics company and Homeowners Friendly Society. In addition, he is a director of Carlisle United Football Club.

Notes for Editors

Lord Clark will chair the Board of Forestry Commissioners. The Commissioners are appointed by The Queen under the Forestry Act 1967.

Their functions include promotion of the interest of Forestry, regulating tree felling, grant-aiding, undertaking research and managing the public forest in England, Wales and Scotland.
