The United Kingdom has the G8 Presidency and European Union Presidency during 2005.
Great Britain will host the G8 summit in Gleneagles, Scotland from July 6-8 where Africa and climate change will be at the top of the agenda.
Each year the President country holds a summit where the leaders of the eight member countries discuss major issues of the day. In a recent speech the PM said that ‘the world, rightly, looks to the G8 to show leadership’.
The PM set up the Commission for Africa last year to tackle the problems of the continent and supports the Make Poverty History campaign.
In 2005 the UK also enjoys a six-month Presidency of the European Union (EU). This began on July 1. One of the main tasks of the Presidency is to arrange, chair and set the agenda for meetings of the EU council.
They also carry on the work from the previous President nation, launch their own initiatives and make representations to non-member states.
