British Museum Trustees

The Prime Minister has today appointed Stephen Green to the Board of the British Museum with effect from 7 July 2005 for a period of four years.

Biographical Details

Stephen Green is Group Chief Executive of HSBC Holdings plc and Chairman of HSBC Bank plc. He began his career with the British Government’s Ministry of Overseas Development and in 1977 he joined McKinsey & Co. He joined The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited in 1982 with responsibility for corporate planning activities and, in 1985, was put in charge of the development of the Bank’s global treasury operations. In 1992 he became Group Treasurer of HSBC Holdings plc, with responsibility for the HSBC Group’s treasury and capital markets businesses globally. In 1998 Stephen Green was appointed to the Board of HSBC Holdings plc as Executive Director, Investment Banking and Markets responsible for the investment banking, private banking and asset management activities of the Group. He assumed additional responsibility for the Group’s corporate banking business in May 2002. His appointment as Group Chief Executive took effect on 1 June 2003.

Stephen Green holds no other public appointments and has not carried out any political activity in the last five years

The Board of Trustees of the British Museum has statutory duties under the British Museum Act 1963 and Museums and Galleries Act 1992 for the general management and control of the Museum and for the appointment of the director.

Trustees are not remunerated. Reasonable expenses can be claimed.

This appointment has been made in accordance with the OCPA Code of Practice. Appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process.
