Statement on the Luxembourg Referendum

11 July 2005

Downing Street has issued the following statement in response to Luxembourg’s Yes vote in its referendum on the EU Constitution.

As Presidency of the EU, we welcome this result and congratulate Prime Minister Juncker and the people of Luxembourg on the open and lively debate during the campaign.

The June 2005 European Council agreed that, following the No votes in France and the Netherlands, there should be a pause for reflection and that decisions about further ratification of this Treaty are a matter for each member state to decide.
