Judicial Appointments

The Queen has been pleased to approve that, following the retirement of The Right Honourable Lord Steyn on October 1, Lord Justice Mance be appointed a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary. The Queen has also been pleased to approve that The Honourable Mr Justice Wilson, The Honourable Mr Justice Moses, The Honourable Mr Justice Richards and The Honourable Mrs Justice Hallett be appointed as Lord Justices of Appeal from 1 October 2005.

Lord Justice (Sir Jonathan) Mance (62) was called to the Bar, Middle Temple, in 1965 and was elected a Bencher in 1989. He took silk in 1982. He was appointed as a High Court Judge in the Queen’s Bench Division in 1993, and in 1999 he was appointed a Lord Justice of Appeal.

Mr Justice (Sir Nicholas) Wilson (60) was called to the Bar, Inner Temple, in 1967 and was elected a Bencher in 1993. He took silk in 1987. He has been a Justice of the High Court, assigned to the Family Division, since 1993.

Mr Justice (Sir Alan) Moses (59) was called to the Bar, Middle Temple, in 1968 and was elected a Bencher in 1994. He has been a Justice of the High Court since 1996, assigned to the Queen’s Bench Division, and was Presiding Judge of the South Eastern Circuit between 1999 and 2002.

Mr Justice (Sir Stephen) Richards (54) was called to the Bar, Gray’s Inn, in 1975 and was elected a Bencher in 1992. He has been a Justice of the High Court, assigned to the Queen’s Bench Division, since 1997 and was Presiding Judge of the Wales and Chester Circuit between 2000 and 2003.

Mrs Justice (Dame Heather) Hallett (55) was called to the Bar, Inner Temple, in 1972 and was elected a Bencher in 1993. She took silk in 1989. She has been a Justice of the High Court, assigned to the Queen’s Bench Division, since 1999 and was Presiding Judge of the Western Circuit between 2001 and 2004.
