New Permanent Secretary for HM Treasury

The Prime Minister, with the agreement of the Chancellor of the Exchequer, has approved the appointment of Nicholas Macpherson, currently Managing Director of Budget and Public Finance, to succeed Sir Gus O’Donnell, as Permanent Secretary of the Treasury.

Sir Gus was appointed to suceed Sir Andrew Turnbull as Secretary of the Cabinet and Head of the Home Civil Service by the Prime Minister on 15 June 2005.

Nicholas Macpherson, 46, has been Managing Director of the Budget and Public Finance Directorate, the Treasury’s largest directorate, since 2004. In this position Nick has had overall responsibility for the Treasury’s work on tax, public finance and welfare reform. Prior to that he was head of the public services directorate from 2001. Other senior positions have included Director of Welfare Reform (1998-2001) and Principal Private Secretary to the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1993-97), where he managed the transition from Kenneth Clarke to Gordon Brown.

On leaving university, Nick worked as an economist for the Confederation of British Industry (1982-83) and as a senior analyst for Peat Marwick and Mitchell Management Consultancy (1983-85). He joined the civil service in 1985.
