Appointment of Dean of Winchester

The Queen has approved the nomination of the Very Reverend James Edgar Atwell MA, ThM, BD, Dean of St Edmundsbury, to be appointed Dean of the Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity and of Saint Peter and Saint Paul and of Saint Swithun in Winchester on the resignation of the Very Reverend Michael Stanley Till MA on 31 October 2005.

Notes for Editors

The Very Reverend James Atwell (aged 59) studied at Exeter College, Oxford for his MA and BD.  He then went to Harvard University to study for his ThM.  He trained for the ministry at Cuddesdon. 

He served his title at East Dulwich St John, Southwark diocese from 1970 to 1974 and a second curacy at Cambridge Great St Mary with St Michael, Ely diocese from 1974 to 1977.  From 1977 to 1981 he was Chaplain at Jesus College Cambridge University. 

From 1981 to 1995 he was Vicar of Towcester with Easton Neston, Peterborough diocese, and also Rural Dean of Towcester from 1983 to 1991.  Since 1995 he has Provost, then Dean of St Edmundsbury.  His publications include:  Sources of the Old Testament (2004).

Dean Atwell is married to Lorna and they have three children. 

Dean Atwell’s interests include the countryside, walking, driving a Landrover, travel, fairground organs, theology, Near East and race relations.
