National Gallery Trustee

The Prime Minister has today appointed Professor David Ekserdjian as a Trustee of the National Gallery. The term of appointment will be for four years from 30 September 2005.

Biographical Details

Professor David Ekserdjian is Head of the Department of History of Art and Film at the University of Leicester. He was a Fellow of Balliol College, Oxford, from 1983-86, and of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, from 1987-91. From 1991-97, he worked for Christie, Manson and Woods, and from 1997-2004 was Editor of Apollo magazine. Since 2002, he has been a Member of the Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art.

Notes for Editors

The National Gallery houses the nation’s prime collection of European paintings from the 13th to 19th century. It includes representative collections of the French, Italian, Dutch, Flemish, German and Spanish schools, together with some British works up to the mid-19th century. The Gallery’s aim is to care for the collection, to enhance it for future generations, primarily by acquisition, and to study it whilst encouraging access to the pictures for the education and enjoyment of the widest possible public now and in the future.

Section 1 to the Museums and Galleries Act 1992 sets out the establishment, constitution, functions and property etc. of the Board of Trustees.

This appointment has been made in accordance with the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments Code of Practice. Appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process.
