Reverend Rogers Govender BTh DipTh appointed as Deanery of Manchester

The Queen has approved the nomination of the Reverend Rogers Govender BTh DipTh, Priest-in-Charge of Didsbury Christ Church and Priest-in-Charge of Withington St Christopher and Area Dean of Withington, to the Deanery of Manchester in succession to the Very Reverend Kenneth Riley on his resignation in June 2005.

The Reverend Rogers Govender (aged 45), born in Durban, South Africa, took a Diploma in Theology at St Paul’s College, Grahamstown, South Africa and gained a Bachelor of Theology from the University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg. He served his first Curacy at Christ Church, Overport from 1985 to 1987. He was Rector of St Mary’s, Greyville, Durban from 1988 to 1992. From 1993 to 1998 he was Rector of St Matthew’s, Hayfields, Pietermartizburg and Archdeacon of Pietermaritzburg from 1997 to 1998. He was Rector of St Thomas, Berea, Durban from 1999 to 2000 before coming to England. He has been Priest in Charge of Christ Church, Didsbury since 2001 and Priest in Charge of St Christopher, Withington since 2003 and Area Dean of Withington since 2004.

The Reverend Rogers is married to Celia and they have two teenage children. His interests include fishing, listening to music, walking, and regular gym training.
