applying for a visa

Not everyone wishing to travel to the UK requires a visa or pre-entry clearance. But, the United Kingdom aims to provide a fair and fast entry clearance service to those who do.

Visa, or entry clearance applications, are processed by entry clearance officers in UK embassies, high commissions and consulates abroad, collectively known as UK missions.

If you are not a British Citizen or a citizen of one the European Economic Area (EEA) countries, you may need an entry clearance before you travel to the UK.

Certain nationalities, known as visa nationals, need to obtain a visa before travelling to the UK. Even if you are not a visa national, you may need an entry clearance depending on the reason for coming to the UK.
