New Permanent Secretary appointed to the Home Office

The Prime Minister, with the agreement of the Home Secretary, has approved the appointment of Sir David Normington to be Permanent Secretary of the Home Office in succession to Sir John Gieve whose appointment as Deputy Governor of the Bank of England was announced today.

Sir David Normington joined the Department of Employment in 1973 and in his early career he held various jobs concerned with employment, training and industrial relations. Between 1987-89 he was Employment Service Regional Director for London and South East and Leader of the City Action Team for Inner London. There he led a region of 8,000 staff in 500 local Jobcentres and Unemployment Benefit Officers. He was also responsible for coordinating the efforts of central Government to regenerate the seven most deprived London boroughs.

Between 1995-97 he was a key figure in the establishment of the merged Department for Education and Employment. In 1998 he became the Director General for Schools, playing a central part in the drive to raise standards in schools and to reform the teaching profession. In 2001 he was appointed Permanent Secretary of the Department for Education and Skills with responsibility for children’s services and childcare, early education, schools, further and higher education and adult and workforce skills.
