The Queen has been pleased to appoint His Honour Judge Gruffydd Huw Morgan Daniel as Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant for Gwynedd following the retirement of Professor Eric Sunderland.
Biographical Note
Judge Daniel (66) was born in Bangor in 1939 and has been a Circuit Judge since 1986. He is a Senior Judge for the Sovereign Base Areas, Cyprus, since 2002. Judge Daniel was called to the Bar, Gray’s Inn in 1967. From 1980 to 1986 he was a Recorder, Assistant Liaison Judge for Gwynedd from 1983 to 1987, and has been Liaison Judge for Gwynedd since 1988 and Liaison Judge for North Wales since 1998. He was Assistant Parliamentary Boundary Commissioner for Wales from 1981 to 1982 and from 1985 to 1986. Judge Daniel is President of the Caerns Branch of the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmens and Families Association and was the Honorary Colonel of the 6th Cadet Battalion of the Royal Welch Fusiliers from 1997 to 2003. Judge Daniel became a Deputy Lieutenant for Gwynedd in 1993.
Judge Daniel is married to Phyllis and they have a daughter, Antonia. He enjoys gardening, shooting, fishing and sailing.
Notes for Editors
Judge Daniel wishes for personal reasons to continue as a Judge of the Crown Court until 30 April 2006 and so his appointment as Lord-Lieutenant for Gwynedd will be effective from 1 May 2006.
