The United Kingdom’s main vehicle for cultural and educational relations with other countries is the British Council.
The British Council strengthens the UK’s reputation overseas through programmes in education, English language, the arts, science, information provision and governance and human rights. It has offices in 111 countries.
The Council’s programmes in science and the arts project the creativity and innovation of contemporary Britain. During 2000, the Council mounted more than 3,000 arts events abroad.
The Council is committed to creating new opportunities to reach wider and younger audiences. Its global teaching network plays a key role in achieving this objective through 136 teaching centres worldwide.
In June 2000, it launched the Learn English website, which is specifically aimed at students and young professionals.
