National Portrait Gallery Appointment of Nicholas Blake

The Prime Minister has appointed Nicholas Blake to the Board of the National Portrait Gallery with effect from 7 November 2005 for a period of four years.

Biographical Details

Nicholas Blake is a barrister practicing in the field of immigration, asylum, public law and related areas. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel (1994) - appointed Recorder of the Crown Court (2000) and a Deputy of a High Court Judge (2003). Mr Blake is a founder member and was first Chair of Matrix Chambers, Grays Inn (2000-2002). He is a part time Lecturer in Human Rights and Asylum at the LSE, a regular lecturer for the FCO Human Rights training programme. Mr Blake is a Fellow of the RSA.

Nicholas Blake holds no other public appointments and has not carried out any party political activity in the last five years.

  1. The Gallery was looking for a person with a strong grounding in the humanities.
  2. The National Portrait Gallery holds the largest and most distinguished collection of portraits in the world. As an institution it fulfils a number of roles relating to the historic and contemporary aspects of this collection: research and academic role and educational role and a wider role within public life.

  4. The posts are not remunerated. Reasonable expenses can be claimed.
  5. The appointments have been made in accordance with the OCPA Code of Practice. Appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process.
